Measure twice, cut once. Our top tips for crafting wow-worthy frames ✂️

Measure twice, cut once. Our top tips for crafting wow-worthy frames ✂️

You’ve probably heard the phrase “measure twice, cut once.” And when it comes to crafting layered frames — whether you’re working with paper, acrylic, or wood — it couldn’t be more true.

All of our projects are designed at 8x8, but frames don’t always measure up the way you’d expect. The inside dimensions of a frame can vary, and even a little shift during assembly can leave your finished piece just slightly off.

That’s why our #1 tip is simple:
👉 Always measure your frame before you start cutting.

The good news? Every CraftyCatSVG project can be resized to fit any frame.

Our favorite frames from Michaels (you’ll find them on our supply list) usually fit straight out of the box, but measuring first ensures your masterpiece slides in perfectly. And if your layers end up just a hair too big? A quick trim (for paper) or light sanding (for wood) gives you that crisp, professional fit.

Our Other Top Tips

For Paper Crafters

  • Use 65–80lb cardstock for smooth cuts and sturdy layers. Find our favorite supplies on our supply list here.
  • Keep blades sharp — dull ones are the #1 cause of fuzzy edges.
  • Dry-fit before gluing so everything lines up perfectly.
  • Use small dots of glue for flatter, neater layers.

For Laser Crafters

  • Use the right materials. Cast acrylic cuts cleaner than extruded acrylic, and quality plywood or hardwood gives sturdier results than cheap sheets. You'll find our favorite supplies on our supply list here.
  • Mask materials before cutting to reduce scorch marks.
  • Lightly sand edges for a polished, professional finish.

✨ Measure twice, cut once — and craft frames that fit perfectly every time.
